Paul J. Smith, FLMI, Senior Vice President and Chief Information Officer, joined HLR America in August 1997 with 15 years of systems experience.
Paul began his reinsurance career in 1985 as a programmer with Hudson Life Reassurance Corporation in Sarasota, Florida. He relocated with the company to Connecticut, where it operated as American Skandia Life Reassurance and, eventually, Hartford Life Reassurance Corporation. Paul advanced to Assistant Vice President - MIS and Administration, where he was responsible for reinsurance administration and systems.
Paul is responsible for the overall direction of HLR America’s Information Technology initiatives.

Doug Gunthorpe, Vice President – Infrastructure, joined HLR America in February 2009. Doug has over 35 years of information technology experience in the areas of academics, manufacturing, banking, and reinsurance. Prior to joining HLR America, Doug held the position of Vice President of Infrastructure for Scottish Re. Prior to joining Scottish Re, Doug served as Technology Operations Manager with First Charter Bank, IT Program Manager with Solectron, and Director of Global Network Services with Collins and Aikman.
Doug holds a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science from Clemson University, and has acted as an adjunct instructor in Information Technology at Belmont Abbey College.
At HLR America, Doug is responsible for the company’s technology infrastructure, including PCs and servers systems, network technology, telecommunications, technology operations and service delivery, information security, content management and database administration.

Jim Pyc, Vice President – Information Technology, joined HLR America in February of 2009. Jim has over 11 years of life reinsurance information technology experience.
Prior to joining HLR America, Jim served in various senior IT roles for ING Re and Scottish Re. Prior to working in life reinsurance, Jim held various IT roles at OppenheimerFunds.
Jim has a degree in computer information systems from Regis University. Prior to working in information technology, Jim was a certified Nuclear Reactor Operator having completed the U.S. Navy’s nuclear propulsion program.
At HLR America, Jim currently has responsibility for the technical aspects of the company’s business intelligence systems and additionally consults on IT projects to provide guidance on data structure and flow.

Tim Whittier, MBA, Vice President – Information Technology Applications, joined HLR America in February 2009. Tim has thirty years of IT development and management experience in the financial services and high-tech industries. Tim has been in the Reinsurance business since 1996, working for ING Re and later Scottish Re, where his responsibilities covered a wide range of IT management activities including application design and development as well as out-sourced infrastructure support and application operations management.
Tim received both his bachelor’s degree in Management Information Systems and Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Colorado.
At HLR America, Tim is responsible for IT application development and support activities.

Larry E. Dinkler, CLU, CEBS, ALMI, Assistant Vice President – IT Application Services, joined HLR America in January of 2006. Prior to joining HLR, he served as Director of Customer Reporting and Implementation Services and Director of Client Management at Integrated DisAbility Resources.
Larry started his insurance career in 1981 with Hartford Life. He is proficient in effectively integrating insurance and technology concepts, as well as a range of business management initiatives. Larry is a Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU), a Certified Employee Benefits Specialist (CEBS), and an Associate, Life Management Institute (ALMI).
At HLR America, Larry is responsible for IT application portfolio management for Finance, Human Resources, Marketing, Actuarial, and Underwriting and will manage the HLR Web intranet and SharePoint planning work streams.
