Chris Shanahan, FSA, MAAA, Executive Vice President - Mortality Solutions, joined HLR America in February of 2009. Chris has overall responsibility for HLR America’s traditional mortality risk business including business development, operations, and financial reporting.
Immediately prior to joining HLR America, Chris served as Interim President & CEO of Scottish Re US. Previously, Chris has held Senior Officer positions in pricing, product development, research, and business development with Lincoln Re, ING Re, and Scottish Re.
Chris has a degree in actuarial science from Drake University. He is a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries (FSA) and a Member of the American Academy of Actuaries (MAAA).

Steve Habegger, FSA, CFA, Vice President Marketing - Mortality Solutions, joined HLR America in October 2010. Steve’s career spans over 15 years in the life insurance and reinsurance industry. Most recently, Steve served as Senior Vice President for Swiss Re.
Prior to joining Swiss Re, Steve served as Senior Vice President with Scottish Re. Steve was Vice President with ING Re and began his career as Regional Vice President with Lincoln National Reinsurance.
Steve holds a bachelor's of science degree in Actuarial Science and Mathematical Economics from Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana. He also has a Masters of Business Administration from Indiana University in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He is a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries (FSA) and a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA).

Tim McGrath, FSA, MAAA, Vice President - Marketing, joined HLR America in February 2005.
Tim has been in the reinsurance business since 1992 and has held a variety of positions, from individual life pricing to marketing/client relationships. He started his career with Sun Life and prior to joining HLR America was with ING Re.
At HLR America, Tim is responsible for client relationships focused on Individual Life U.S. mortality related business.

Mike Reeves, Assistant Vice President – Marketing, joined HLR America in May 2007. Prior to joining HLR America, Mike worked as a Senior Benefits Consultant at Gallagher Benefit Services, Inc., where he developed a consultative sales process and service plan that targeted client renewal and retention.
Mike began his career in sales and marketing in 1996. He has extensive knowledge of the life and health insurance industries, as well as underwriting practices and client management programs.
At HLR America, Mike is responsible for assisting in the implementation of new business development strategies and client relationship management.

Jeff Rosenberg, FLMI, AALU, Marketing - Mortality Solutions, joined HLR America in October 2010. Jeff has over 30 years of reinsurance experience in both marketing and underwriting.
Prior to joining HLR America, Jeff enjoyed a 34 year career with Swiss Re. During that time Jeff served as Senior Vice President of Client Markets, Vice President and Account Executive and was a Senior Underwriting Officer. Jeff began his career with New York Life Insurance Company as an Individual Life Underwriter.
Jeff is a graduate of Long Island University. He is a Fellow of the Life Management Institute (FLMI) and an Associate, Academy of Life Underwriting (AALU).

Lisa K. Smith, CLU, Senior Vice President – Operations, joined HLR America in February 2009 with over 25 years of industry experience. She also serves as HLR America’s Denver Site Manager.
Lisa began her career with ING Security Life of Denver. She advanced within ING holding various positions in its retail and reinsurance businesses including Executive Director of strategic planning and organizational development and Vice President – Business Operations. Prior to joining HLR America, Lisa worked for Scottish Re as Senior Vice President – Business Operations for four years where she also led several systems integration efforts.
Lisa holds a bachelor’s of science degree in economics from Bates College.
At HLR America, Lisa is responsible for Assumed and Retrocession Administration, Claims, Client Data Management, Business Project Support, and Treaty Compliance Audit with 90 employees in Denver, Charlotte and Orlando.

Christopher M. Heeren, Vice President - Retrocession Administration, joined HLR America in February 2009.
He began his career in the life reinsurance industry in 1991 with ING Re and has worked in a variety of areas including assumed and retrocession administration, client auditing, IT, and valuation. Prior to joining HLR America, Chris worked for Scottish Re as VP Business Operations and VP Retrocession.
He is currently a member of the Reinsurance Administration Professionals Association (RAPA) and has previously served as Chair for this industry association. Chris has a bachelor’s of science in mathematics from Colorado State University.
At HLR America, Chris is responsible for retrocession administration on the ING acquired block of business.

Jane A. Newell, CPA (Inactive), Vice President - Finance, Mortality Solutions, joined HLR America in February 2009 with approximately 14 years experience in the banking and reinsurance industries.
Before joining HLR America, Jane spent five years with Scottish Re, managing the financial accounting and reporting function for the Traditional Life business. Prior to that, she spent eight years with the Bank of Bermuda with a primary focus on financial accounting and reporting, along with financial planning & analysis.
Jane completed her accounting studies at City College of Chicago, on the US Naval Air Station in Bermuda and graduated with High Honors. She is a member of the Georgia Society of Certified Public Accountants.
At HLR America, Jane is responsible for the financial reporting, planning and analysis for the Mortality Solutions line of business.

Brian T. Newman, FLMI, Vice President – Client Data Management, joined HLR America in February 2009 with over 20 years of industry experience.
Prior to joining HLR America, Brian spent a number of years with ING Re and later Scottish Re, where he was responsible for the receipt and management of client reporting and policy administration. Brian’s prior experience includes time in IT, ceded reinsurance administration and as a licensed P&C broker at Lloyd’s of London.
Brian is a member of the Reinsurance Administration Professionals Association (RAPA) and is a Fellow of the Life Management Institute (FLMI).

R. Jeffrey Wright, FSA, MAAA, Senior Vice President - Finance and Risk Management, Mortality Solutions, joined HLR America in February 2009. Jeff brings over 15 years of life insurance experience to the position.
In 2005 Jeff joined Scottish Re where he led the conversion of the legacy ING models to the MoSes platform. Prior to Scottish Re, he served as Director of Pricing from 2003-2004 for ING Re, where he maintained the ING pricing system in ALFA. Earlier in his career he worked for ING on the direct side of the business in various actuarial capacities since 1995.
Jeff holds a bachelor’s of arts degree in economics from Duke University and Master of Actuarial Science degree from Georgia State University. He is a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries (FSA) and a Member of the American Academy of Actuaries (MAAA).
At HLR America, Jeff is responsible for overseeing the actuarial modeling, valuation, financial reporting and inforce management functions for the Mortality Solutions business unit.

Laura L. Ewald, FLHC, FLMI, FALU, CLU, AVP – Claims, joined HLR America in February 2009 with over 30 years of industry experience.
Her past experience includes management of ING Re’s and Scottish Re’s claims department, managing daily activities, training and mentoring claim representatives and conducting client audits. Prior to joining ING Re, Laura was a direct side underwriter and held various management positions.
Laura holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Northern Colorado. Laura has been active in the International Claim Association (ICA) and previously chaired the Reinsurance Sub-Committee for a number of years. Laura is a Fellow, Life and Health Claims (FLHC), Fellow of the Life Management Institute (FLMI), Fellow of the Academy of Life Underwriting (FALU), and a Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU).
At HLR America, Laura is responsible for the overall management of the claims department with teams in Denver and Orlando.

Jim Robinson, MBA, FLMI, Assistant Vice President – Premium Accounting, joined HLR America in February 2009 with over 20 years of reinsurance experience.

Pearl J. Johnson, ACS, Director - Business Administration, joined HLR America in October 1989, following 15 years of experience in the banking industry.
Pearl received her bachelor's of arts degree from Cambridge University. She is an Associate, Customer Service (ACS).

Jay Biehl, FSA, MAAA, Senior Vice President - Pricing, joined HLR America in February 2009. Jay has over 20 years in the reinsurance industry, most recently as Senior Vice President, Research & Analysis with Scottish Re. Prior to joining Scottish Re he was Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer for Tower Bank and Trust Company. Formerly, Jay served as Chief Pricing Officer for ING Re following 18 years with Lincoln National, primarily with Lincoln Re where he served in a variety of roles including Chief Pricing Actuary and Head of Research and Development.
Jay holds a bachelor’s of science degree in actuarial science and computer science from Ball State University. He is a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries (FSA) and a Member of the American Academy of Actuaries (MAAA).

Sean Conrad, FSA, MAAA, FIA, CFA, Vice President - Pricing, joined HLR America in April 2011. Sean’s career spans over 10 years in the life insurance and reinsurance industry including three years working in the UK and Irish market.
Prior to joining HLR America, Sean was Risk Manager for the US Life & Protection and Canadian business units of AEGON with oversight responsibility for pricing, ALM, portfolio management, and other risk & capital related activities. Before that, Sean held various pricing, product development, and marketing roles at Munich Re, ING Re, and Great-West Life.
Sean graduated from Butler University earning a bachelor’s degree in actuarial science with a minor in business administration. Anthony Laudato, FSA, Vice President and Pricing Actuary, joined HLR America in July 2012. Tony has a varied background with experience in direct Product Development strategy, design and pricing activities. His background also includes Financial and Strategic Planning and Risk Management.

Lloyd Spencer, FSA, MAAA, CERA, Vice President - Research Actuary, joined HLR America in April 2010. Lloyd has spent his career in various roles at both direct companies and reinsurers. Prior to joining HLR America, Lloyd served as Vice President, Corporate Actuary for OneAmerica and 13 years with Lincoln Financial Group.
Lloyd holds a bachelor’s of science degree (magna cum laude) from Ball State University. He is a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries (FSA), Member of the American Academy of Actuaries (MAAA) and a Chartered Enterprise Risk Analyst of the SOA (CERA).
At HLR America, Lloyd is responsible for leading Applied Research including ownership of Summit as well as involvement with mortality assessment related to credit financial deals. Ben Carson, FSA, Vice President - Actuary and Pricing, joined HLR America in February 2009.
Prior to joining HLR America, Ben was AVP & Actuary with Scottish Re where he managed the COLI business and was also responsible for pricing life reinsurance opportunities in the Group, Credit, and Mortality Solutions markets.

Kevin P. Larsen, ASA, MAAA, FLMI, Assistant Vice President - Actuary, joined HLR America in February 2009. He has 25 years experience in the life insurance business.
For 20 years he has played many roles in reinsurance, including financial reporting, traditional pricing, product development, market research, and experience analysis. Prior to arriving at HLR America, Kevin worked at Scottish Re, ING Reinsurance, and Great-West Life.
Kevin earned his bachelor’s degree in mathematics and actuarial science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He is an Associate of Society of Actuaries (ASA), Member of the American Academy of Actuaries (MAAA) and a Fellow of the Life Management Institute (FLMI).

Steven A. Savery, FSA, MAAA, Assistant Vice President - Actuary, joined HLR America in February 2009. Most recently, Steven served at Scottish Re where he specialized in mortality research and prior to that he worked with ING Reinsurance.
Steven earned his bachelor’s degree in math from the United States Naval Academy and his master’s degree in actuarial science from the University of Wisconsin. He has been a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries (FSA) since 1997 and a Member of the American Academy of Actuaries (MAAA) since 1994.

Andy’s career spans 30 years in insurance and reinsurance roles. Immediately prior to joining HLR America, Andy served as Senior Vice President and Chief Actuary of Scottish Re US. Previously, he held positions with Swiss Re, Lincoln Re, and Ernst & Young.
Andy has a BA in mathematics from Coe College and an MBA from the University of Michigan. He is a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries (FSA) and a Member of the American Academy of Actuaries (MAAA).

Richard E. Green, CPA, Vice President - Inforce Management, Mortality Solutions, joined HLR America in February 2009. He has over 25 years experience in the insurance industry after initial experience in public accounting working for Ernst & Young.
Prior to joining HLR America, Rick worked for several years at ING Re and later Scottish Re, where his responsibilities included policy administration, management reporting, and process design. Prior to that, Rick worked with Colorado Blue Cross/Blue Shield and Security Life of Denver leading internal auditing, designing, implementing and managing budget systems and corporate processes, and software project implementations.
Rick graduated magna cum laude from the University of Denver, Colorado, with a bachelor’s degree in accounting. He is a member of both the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Colorado Society of Certified Public Accountants.
At HLR America, Rick is responsible for identification and analysis of current and anticipated underperforming treaties and recommending action to be taken to improve performance.

Joan M. Paulter, CLU, Vice President -Treaties and Retro, joined HLR America in February 2009. Joan has more than 25 years of professional experience in the life reinsurance industry, working for major reinsurance companies. Her primary responsibilities have been the creation and analysis of complex reinsurance and insurance related contracts. She has also directed reinsurance operations in the areas of administration, claims and systems liaison.
Prior to joining HLR America, Joan was Vice President with Scottish Re (U.S.), Inc., where she was responsible for setting treaty contract parameters and managed the development and writing of all reinsurance and retrocession contracts covering Life Insurance products, including conventional and financial treaties.
Prior to joining Scottish Re, she served as VP with General Cologne Life Reassurance Company and AVP with Hartford International Life Reassurance Corporation, and AVP with General Reassurance Corporation.

Jennifer K. Atlee, CIA, Assistant Vice President – Quality Assurance & Compliance, joined HLR America in February 2009 with approximately 12 years experience in the audit and reinsurance fields.
Before joining HLR America, Jennifer spent four years with Scottish Re, managing the Client Compliance Audit function. Prior to that, she spent four years with the ING Re as an audit manager. Jennifer also gained extensive experience at Arthur Andersen, where she began her audit career.
Jennifer graduated from the Trinity University with a bachelor’s of science in Business Administration. She earned her Master’s in Accounting from Trinity University as well. She is a Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) and a member of the Institute of Internal Auditors.

Kevin Oldani, Senior Vice President - Chief Underwriter, joined HLR America in April 2009. Kevin Oldani has over 27 years of underwriting experience.
His past experience includes management of ING Re’s underwriting department, training and mentoring on underwriting issues, conducting client visits/audits, managing client relationships, and underwriting management of the COLI/BOLI line of business. Most recently, Kevin was Vice President of Underwriting for Scottish Re. Kevin’s career also includes the management of new business and underwriting at a large brokerage insurance company.
Kevin is a member of AHOU and the Rocky Mountain Society of Home Office Underwriters. Kevin is past president of The Southeastern Underwriters Association, past Chairman of the COLI Directors meeting and is on the Executive Committee for the Impaired Risk Underwriting Association.

Brian Hiserote, Vice President - Underwriting, joined HLR America in February 2009. He started in the life underwriting business in 1979 with Allstate Insurance in Northbrook, IL. From 1984 to 1994 he worked for Great West Life in Denver, Colorado as an Assistant Manager, Underwriting.
Brian has spent the last 15 years in Reinsurance, 1994 – 1998 at Transamerica Re in Charlotte, North Carolina, as an Underwriting Consultant, 1998 – 2004 at ING Re in Denver, Colorado, as a Regional Underwriting Director, and 2005 – 2009 at Scottish Re as Vice President, Underwriting Auditor.
Brian attended Illinois State University where he received a bachelor’s of science degree in Business Administration. He is a member of the Association of Home Office Underwriters and the Western Home Office Underwriters Association where he served as president in 2007.
At HLR America, Brian’s responsibilities include working with the actuarial staff on pricing issues, conducting both internal and client underwriting audits, and providing support for the electronic underwriting manual, ASCENT and facultative administration and workflow systems.

Doug Ingle, FALU, FLMI, Vice President - Underwriting Research, joined HLR America in April 2010. Doug has over 30 years in the reinsurance industry. Prior to joining HLR America, Doug spent five years with Northwestern Mutual as Director of Underwriting Standards. Prior to joining Northwestern Mutual, Doug served as Vice President of Underwriting and Mortality Research with ING Re, and Vice President and Chief Reinsurance Underwriter for American United Life.

Curt Rullestad, Vice President - Underwriting, joined HLR America in February 2009.
Curt started in the life underwriting business in 1981 with Inter-State Assurance in Des Moines, Iowa. He moved to Denver, Colorado in 1986 and began working at Security Life of Denver as a Senior Underwriter. He transferred to the reinsurance division (ING Re) in 1993, where he served as a Regional Chief Underwriter until 2004 when he began working for Scottish Re. He was a Vice President, Underwriting Auditor with Scottish Re until he joined HLR America.
Curt attended the University of Iowa where he received a bachelor’s degree in Psychology, as well as a Master’s Degree in Business Administration. Curt’s professional affiliations include membership in the Association of Home Office Underwriters and the Rocky Mountain Home Office Underwriter’s Association.

Clifton P. Titcomb, Jr., MD , Vice President – Chief Medical Director, joined HLR America in May 2012. Cliff has over 20 years of experience in the insurance industry.
Most recently, Cliff served as Vice President and Secretary for International Medical Risk Consultants where he served as a consultant to both insurance and non-insurance industry clients. Previously, Cliff served as Chief Medical Officer for ING RE.
Cliff is a graduate of Georgetown University School of Medicine and completed his internship and residency in internal medicine at the Medical College of Wisconsin.

Paul Jones, Assistant Vice President - Specialty Products, joined HLR America in October 1998. Paul has over 23 years of underwriting experience.
Paul joined the Hannover Group in March of 1991 in South Africa. He moved to the Head Office in Germany in 1996. Paul has experience in various markets including South Africa, UK and Europe and Asia, covering numerous products.
His past experience includes underwriting traditional business including critical illness, disability income and group business. Paul managed the underwriting office in Durban, South Africa providing underwriting services, training and client relationship management. Paul managed the Group Life unit in Johannesburg before moving to Germany.
Paul is a member of AHOU, Southeastern Underwriters Association and also a member of the Continental American Underwriting Study Group.
